Trip Overview

The Lower Dolpo Trek is one of Nepal’s most remote and thrilling treks, offering an extraordinary journey through some of the most rugged and stunning landscapes in the Himalayas. Nestled in the western part of Nepal, this trek takes you through high-altitude deserts, deep gorges, snow-capped peaks, and pristine turquoise lakes, making it an unforgettable adventure for those seeking solitude and raw natural beauty.

Starting from Jhupal, the trek leads through several traditional Tibetan settlements and small villages, where trekkers can immerse themselves in the unique culture and ancient Buddhist traditions of the Dolpo people. The region has been isolated for centuries, preserving its Bon and Tibetan Buddhist heritage, which can be seen in the ancient monasteries, colorful chortens, and prayer flags along the trail.

One of the biggest highlights of this trek is Shey Phoksundo Lake, Nepal’s deepest and most beautiful alpine lake, with its mesmerizing turquoise-blue waters surrounded by rugged cliffs and snowy peaks. Trekkers will also traverse through Shey Phoksundo National Park, home to an incredible diversity of wildlife, including the Himalayan blue sheep (bharal), yaks, Himalayan black bears, and the elusive snow leopard.

The trail takes hikers across two of the highest passes in the region—Numa La Pass (5,190m) and Baga La Pass (5,170m)—offering breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, including Putha Hiunchuli (7,246m) and Churen Himal. These high-altitude passes challenge trekkers both physically and mentally, making this trek ideal for experienced hikers looking for an off-the-beaten-path adventure.

Despite its challenges, the Lower Dolpo Trek is a rewarding experience that leaves a lasting impression on every traveler. Whether it’s the raw wilderness, untouched landscapes, or the spiritual energy of the region, this trek promises a journey like no other in Nepal.

Dolpo Trek Cost

The cost of the Lower Dolpo Trek varies depending on several factors, such as the trek duration, type of accommodations, permits, and the trekking agency chosen. On average, the cost can range between $4,000 to $6,000 per person, which typically includes:

  • Trekking permits (Restricted Area Permit & Shey Phoksundo National Park Entry Fee)
  • Domestic flights (Kathmandu-Nepalgunj-Jhupal and return)
  • Guide and porter services
  • Accommodation and meals during the trek
  • Camping gear (if required)
  • Ground transportation

Due to the remoteness of Dolpo, logistics and transportation costs make this trek more expensive than other trekking routes in Nepal. Choosing a reliable trekking agency is essential to ensure a safe and well-organized experience. For more detail see in Cost Include Exclude Section.

Useful Info

Best Time for Dolpo Trek

The best seasons to trek in Dolpo are spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) when the weather is stable, clear, and dry.

  • Spring (March-May): The trails come alive with rhododendron blooms, and the weather is mild and pleasant. This is one of the best times to enjoy the lush landscapes and wildlife sightings.
  • Autumn (September-November): The skies are crystal clear, offering the best mountain views. The weather is cool and dry, making trekking conditions perfect.
  • Monsoon (June-August): Dolpo falls in a rain-shadow region, so it receives less rainfall compared to other parts of Nepal. Trekking is possible, but trails may be wet and muddy.
  • Winter (December-February): Heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures make trekking very challenging, and most routes remain inaccessible.
