Trip Overview
Tsum Valley Trek is an extraordinary Himalayan journey that unveils the beauty of one of Nepal's most secluded and spiritually rich valleys. Located in the northern region of the Manaslu area, the Tsum Valley remained restricted to outsiders until 2008, making it a hidden gem still relatively untouched by mass tourism. This off-the-beaten-path trek allows adventurers to explore remote Tibetan Buddhist villages, ancient monasteries, and stunning alpine landscapes.
Tsum Valley once functioned as a vital trade link with Tibet and still preserves its authentic cultural essence and mystical allure. Deeply influenced by Tibetan Buddhism, the region is home to revered monasteries like Mu Gompa and Rachen Gompa. The local Tsumbas people, with their preserved traditions, warm hospitality, and spiritual lifestyle, make this trek not just a physical journey but a cultural and spiritual one.
The Tsum Valley Trek itinerary begins similarly to the Manaslu Circuit Trek, following the same route up to Lokpa. However, just after Lokpa, instead of heading towards Deng, Namrung, Samagaun, and Larke La Pass, the trail branches off into the mystical Tsum Valley. From here, the journey unfolds through culturally rich and scenic landmarks such as Chumling, Chhekamparo, Nile, and the sacred Mu Gompa—one of the highest and most remote monasteries in the region. Trekkers can also explore Rachen Gompa, Gumba Lungdang, and enjoy an adventurous side trip to Ganesh Himal Base Camp. This off-the-beaten-path trek winds through ancient Tibetan Buddhist settlements, dense rhododendron forests, and picturesque valleys before looping back through Lokpa, Jagat, and Machha Khola, eventually concluding in Kathmandu—as outlined in the full itinerary below.
Along the trail, trekkers are rewarded with breathtaking views of Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, and Buddha Himal ranges. The trail winds through thick rhododendron forests, scenic terraced farmlands, icy glacial streams, and secluded Himalayan villages. You’ll witness a unique blend of natural beauty and vibrant culture while navigating through this high Himalayan wonderland.
This trek is suitable for trekkers of moderate fitness and can be customized for individual preferences, including optional side trips and acclimatization days. Adventure High Pass offers fully guided trekking with all necessary permits, accommodations, and support.

Overnight in Kathmandu.
Today, take a tour of Kathmandu's UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It begins after breakfast, around 9 am. Some delightful spiritual sites include Pashupatinath, Boudhanath, Swayambhunath, and Kathmandu Durbar Square in Kathmandu. But, the exploration depends on the time. Then you can also prepare for the trek.
Overnight in Kathmandu.
After a delicious breakfast, you'll head out of Kathmandu on a drive. The route departs from the Prithvi Highway in the valley of the Trishuli River and divides to head in the direction of the Manaslu region. Machha Khola will still be reached after a lengthy and exhausting drive.
Overnight in Machha Khola.
We move forward from Machha Khola, cross the stream, and arrive at Khorlabesi. Then, if the route fits you, we continue on to Tatopani, where you can take advantage of the natural hot spring. We continue walking toward Jagat after crossing the intersection of two streams. Overnight in Jagat.
After finishing the ACAP process, we ascend to Salleri along a rugged slope before descending to Sirdibas. As the trail ascends to Ghatta Khola, the valley becomes slightly wider.
Ascend to Philim, a major gurung settlement. The police station and school in Philim Valley are famous for being made in Japan. From Gum Pul, head north through a forest with views of Philim to reach Lokpa.
Overnight in Lokpa.
From Lokpa, the trail descends for a half-hour to Lungwa khola before requiring two hours of arduous trail ascending through pine and rhododendron forests to reach Gumlung. Arrive to Chumling, lower Tsum, where we may see Shringi Himal, after crossing the Siyar Khola. Visit the village's stone streets and the historic Chumling gompa.
Overnight in Chumling.
To get to the other bank, cross the suspension bridge. Enjoy Ganesh Himal's stunning sights. We reach the Gho Village after passing Rainjam and Serpu Khola and crossing another bridge. We reach the town of Chhekangparo after another 2 hour trek to Tsum. Take in the vistas of Ganesh Himal and Himalchuli.
Overnight in Chhokangparo.
We walk through the Ngakyu settlements. As we proceed to Chhule and the Nile, we pass the villages of Burji, Phurbe, and Pangdun. On the route, we can see some amazing, enormous Buddhist stupas.

After that, we go to the Dhephu Doma Gompa. We take a tour of the entire Mu Gompa Region today. Mu Gompa is the biggest monastery in the area. The Gompa is located in the Tsum Valley's highest and most isolated area. After visiting the Mu Gompa region, we retrace back to NIle.
Overnight in Nile.
Today, the distance from Nile to Chhekamparo is short. We hike through Lar Village and stop at the Rachen Gompa, also known as the Nunnery Gompa. After then we cross a suspension bridge, and hike back to Chhekamparo along the same route.
Overnight in Chhekangparo.
From Chhekamparo, the trail descends to Gho, where it crosses the Dumje Bridge. There, we can go to the Amchi, a traditional Tibetan medical facility. There is a nun who runs a tiny Amchi and teaches between 10 and 21 young nuns. She offers Tibetan tea as a greeting to the visitor. It takes us around two to three hours to trek to Gumba Lungdang, where the monastery provides minimal shelter and food.
Overnight in Gumba Lundang.
Due to the track's poor marking, your guide is essential for your excursion. The journey proceeds through the forest on a stony, vague path through the paths that ascend the valley. On a rickety wooden bridge, cross the Laudang Khola to the west side, then climb steeply up a ridge amid beautiful pine and rhododendron groves.
You can locate a pathway on the moraine wall that provides excellent vistas of mountains if you keep going past temporary yak lodges. Ganesh Himal Base Camp is reachable in 4 hours (4200m). We follow the route back to Gumba Lungdang.
Overnight in Gumba Lungdang.
Start early because today can be demanding. Take the ascending track to leave Gumba Lungdang and descend. Cross the Laudang Khola in Dumje, then continue along the south bank of the Shiar Khola (contrary to the map). Soon enough you reach Ripchet. Spend some time exploring this barley and buckwheat field is surrounded by pine trees. Here onwards, hike up to Lokpa via the pure temperature forest.

You will then continue to descend before crossing the Budi Gandaki River on a lengthy suspension bridge. Then, after traveling through the Gatte Khola, you will arrive in Sirdibas. To get to Jagat from here, you must journey through small settlements and down a rocky trail.
Overnight in Jagat.
You will stroll along the rough trail as you descend to the lower Jagat. To get to Yarubagar, you will then traverse a suspension bridge and walk through a forest. You'll descend through the forest on the rocky trail. You further cross various rivers countless times to arrive at Machha Khola.
